The Laundry, Redesigned

For houses where the basket keeps winning
Two pages. A set-up you do once, four moves you can do badly, and permission for the weeks it falls over anyway.
The job was never the washing. The machine does that bit. It’s the eleven small decisions stacked around it — which pile, which setting, how much powder, whose is this, where does it go — and every one of them costs something you might not have today.
So this doesn’t ask you to try harder. It takes the decisions out.
Set it up once
Two baskets instead of a pile, pods instead of measuring, bins instead of folding. Three changes, made on a day you have something in the tank, and then never again.
The four moves
Start it, move it, dry it, put it away sitting down. Each one hung off something you already do without thinking, because a new habit on its own does not survive.
For the weeks it goes wrong anyway
The five-minute trick that works because five minutes is a length of time your brain will agree to. And the bit where you wear it straight out of the basket, because it is clean and nobody is coming to inspect it.

If you want the why rather than the what
There is a longer piece on the decision load underneath all of it — why laundry is so hard with ADHD, and why “just put a wash on” is never one job.
Who made it
We’re an ADHD family and the basket won for years. This is what we actually do now, written down because we needed it — which is the only reason any of it works.
